What factors can affect the range of my motorcycle?

The distance you can travel on a vehicle is a crucial consideration when you're in the market. Here we break down what range means, what impacts it, and how to maximise it.

When you’re considering an electric vehicle, one of the most important factors is range. But what does that actually mean, and how is it measured? In simple terms, range is the maximum distance a vehicle can travel. For an electric motorcycle like a Maeving, it refers to how far you can ride on a single full charge of the battery or batteries.

RM1S_Vincent_Studio_Battery_RemovingRange is a crucial factor when choosing an electric vehicle, especially as ‘refuelling’ can be more challenging with limited charging infrastructure. In the UK, most people commute between 10–20 miles to work, a distance the Maeving RM1 and Maeving RM1S can comfortably cover on a single charge.

With removable batteries that plug into any standard household socket, recharging is as straightforward as charging your laptop at work. The real-world range your Maeving achieves on the road depends on several factors. Estimating the range of an electric motorcycle can be challenging, as it varies from rider to rider. Key variables that affect range include:

Due to the high number of variables, accurate real-world testing can be complicated. The range that our bikes deliver is impacted by numerous variables. These include:
  • Extreme temperatures.
  • Wind.
  • Incline.
  • Weight of the rider.
  • Riding style (aggressive acceleration vs. tempered acceleration).
  • Time spent riding at the top speed vs. cruising.
  • With the key in the OFF position, the motorbike's electronics will consume a very small amount of power, and a fully charged battery will drain at an extremely slow rate.
  • Carrying a passenger

To get the most out of every ride, there are several ways to extend the range of your electric motorcycle.

1. Stay charged: it may sound simple, but starting your journey with your batteries as close to fully charged as possible will maximise the distance you can cover before needing to stop.

2. Moderate your speed: rapid acceleration and higher speeds drain the battery more quickly and reduce range. Riding at lower speeds, which you can easily do by switching to Balanced Mode (2) or Range Mode (3), will help extend your Maeving’s range.

3. Store batteries indoors: keeping your batteries at room temperature is the best way to protect their health and optimise range for your next ride. Charging them indoors helps to maximise performance and longevity. Avoid leaving your batteries in greenhouses or conservatories, where temperatures can often reach harmful levels.
