What does a CBT licence allow me to do?
If you’re 17 or older, you’re permitted to ride a scooter or motorbike with a continuous power output of up to 125cc, or an electric equivalent of up to 11kW. This covers most lightweight commuter bikes and learner‑legal electric motorcycles, giving you access to a wide range of practical city and short‑distance options while you build experience on the road.
If you’re 16, you can ride a scooter or motorbike with a power output of up to 50cc, or the electric equivalent of up to 4kW. These vehicles are typically limited in top speed and acceleration, making them a suitable first step into powered two‑wheelers while you get used to handling, road positioning, and everyday traffic conditions.
At both ages, you are also allowed to ride on dual carriageways, provided your bike meets the minimum legal requirements and you hold the correct licence and compulsory basic training (CBT). This means you can use faster, multi‑lane roads for commuting or longer journeys, but you should be confident in your ability to maintain appropriate speeds and follow lane discipline before doing so.
You may ride the RM2 on your own without any additional licence requirements. However, if you intend to carry a passenger (known as a pillion), you must hold an A1 licence that specifically permits you to carry a pillion safely and legally.
Maeving offers a New Rider Programme that reimburses the cost of your CBT upon purchasing a Maeving. Interested? Sign up here.
